Most of us would agree that while healthy eating is high on our priority list, we lack the time, knowledge, and discipline to prepare nutritious meals on a regular basis. Luckily, there are an abundance of meal prep businesses to choose from that are dedicated to assisting you in achieving your nutrition goals. So which one is right for you? Time
How committed are you?

Obviously having someone else get your groceries and prepare your meals for you saves you time, but how long do you want to invest money into this service? Maybe you have a harder time with dinner after a long work day, but are crushing your breakfast and lunch goals. A few things to think about before you start your research..

Do they require..

  • a contractual agreement & are longer terms discounted
  • a deposit & how are payments collected
  • you to order a three meal service, or are there a la carte options
  • you to pick up or do they offer delivery
Eboni says “Essentially you do save money if you commit longer – the more consultations/meal prep you purchase the less you pay.”

Knowledge
What type of expertise do you need?

Most people believe that they have a good idea about what foods are “healthy,” and would be surprised to learn that they are misinformed. When hiring a certified nutritionist to plan and cook meals for you, you are investing in an individual that has dedicated four plus years of higher education to understand how our bodies operate, which foods are ideal, and how much we should consume. There are also nutritionists that focus on specific needs and lifestyles; weight loss/gain, diabetes, vegetarian or vegan. Just like you wouldn’t bring a Porsche to a Toyota dealership, if you have dietary restrictions you should seek out someone that better fits your needs.When searching for a meal prep service it would be a good idea to ask whether they have certifications or references that vouch for their expertise.

Eboni says “Anyone who processes meal prep should have a food and safety certification or a food handlers card – which are requirements in all restaurants and food establishments.”

Discipline
What are your long term goals?

Sometimes we just need someone to point us in the right direction before we find our own way, and that can be the case in terms of a meal service as well. Once you start seeing results and healthy eating becomes a way of life, maybe you’re ready to try meal prepping on your own, but then hit a mental roadblock when trying to diversify your menu. Some meal prep companies offer digital meal plans that include recipes, grocery lists, and food measurements! Taking a more active role in preparing meals yourself can greatly increase the chances that healthy eating becomes a way of life, not just a phase you’re going through. Digital plans may be an easier transition than cutting your meal service off completely, so ask businesses if that is an option.

Eboni says “I recommend clients to use plans or try meal prep for 21 days to a month. So 3-4 week so they can get a feel to and start to see the initial weight loss or goals they are trying to achieve.”

Choosing a meal prep service that’s right for you is something that should be carefully considered, as should anything that requires an investment of your time and money. An assessment of your personal needs and long term plans will be of great help when shopping around for different companies. Have a list of questions ready, be clear on pricing options, and make sure that you do business with a licensed company. Remember that health is wealth and our bodies will operate efficiently when we fuel them correctly.. eat well!
